Long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X has added another five Airbus A330neo jets to its previous commitment for 50, and firmed the entire order.

AirAsia X had strongly pressed Airbus to re-engine the A330 and, following the airframer's decision to launch the type, signed up for 50 at the Farnborough air show earlier this year.

Airbus says the carrier has confirmed its order and added another five of the Rolls-Royce Trent 7000-powered jets, bringing the total to 55.

Co-founder of AirAsia X Tony Fernandes says the agreement will allow the carrier to "consolidate its growth rate" in 2015-17 before ramping-up deliveries from 2018, when deliveries of the new aircraft will begin.

AirAsia X has ordered a total of 91 A330s.
