American Airlines plans to introduce seats with extra legroom in the economy cabin of its entire mainline fleet, and will begin installations this year.
Called Main Cabin Extra, the seats will have four to six inches of extra leg room over a regular economy seat and travellers will also get access to priority boarding. American plans to roll out the product on its Boeing 777-300ERs from spring 2012.
New Boeing 737-800 aircraft to be delivered to American from this fall will come with the new seating, and the airline expects its future Airbus A320 family aircraft and 777-300ERs and 787s to be equipped with the new product as well.
Travellers can purchase Main Cabin Extra for between $8 and $108 per flight segment while certain frequent flyers and passengers who pay a full economy fare will receive it free, said the airline.
