US-based Ametek Aerospace & Defense continues to grow its maintenance, repair and overhaul business with the opening of a new service center near Singapore Changi Airport by the end of the first quarter.

The 18,000 square foot facility will operate as a unit of Ametek Southern Aeroparts.

Amtek in 2006 started an expansion of its MRO business through acquisitions of third-party providers. The company purchased Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Southern Aeroparts, which specializes in hydraulic, pneumatic and electromechanical components and subsystems.

In November 2007 Ametek bought the repair and overhaul division of UK-based Umeco, which included AEM, Antavia and Avionics Mobile. Those three businesses cover Airbus, Boeing and various helicopter platforms, and a wide range of business and regional aircraft. Specific capabilities include repair and overhaul of electrical and electronic equipment, fluid power devices and hydraulic components, actuation systems, landing gear, wheels and brakes and safety equipment.

Ametek also in 2007 acquired B&S Aircraft Parts and Accessories based in Wichita, Kansas. B&S supplies third-party MRO services for starter generators, and hydraulic and fuel system components for business aircraft and helicopters.

In addition to expanding its MRO capabilities Ametek Aerospace & Defense also is a supplier of various aircraft components including engine and aircraft monitoring systems, power generation and distribution systems, data acquisition units, fuel and fluid measurement systems, engine and airframe sensors and heat transfer and cooling systems. The company is supplier for the Embraer Phenom 100/300 business jet, and a sub-supplier on the Boeing 787.

Parent company Ametek Inc, which is a manufacturer of electronic instruments and eletromechanical devices, says it has annual sales of more than $2 billion.
