Air New Zealand (ANZ) is introducing mobile phone and data capability on its new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the first of which will arrive in November.

Passengers will be able to use their mobile phones to send and receive e-mails and text messages during flights, as well as use their laptops to send e-mails and surf the Internet, says the Star Alliance carrier.

However, they will not be allowed to make voice calls on board.

ANZ is offering the service in partnership with in-flight phone and data operator Aeromobile.

The airline has five 777-300ERs on order, according to Flightglobal's ACAS database.
