Australia's transport ministry has approved Darwin International Airport's 2010 master plan, the details of which will be released within the next two months.
The airport is projected to handle four million passengers by 2030, up from 1.5 million last year, says Anthony Albanese, Australia's infrastructure and transport minister.
To cope with this, the plan includes a major redevelopment of the passenger terminal by 2013, and the progressive upgrade of taxiways and general aviation facilities, he adds.
There are also proposals for new roads leading to the airport, and the operator will work with the Darwin city council to improve safety and access to the airport.
