Passengers have been evacuated from a British Airways Airbus A319 after the aircraft returned to London Heathrow after suffering apparent engine damage.

Images of the aircraft (G-EUOE) suggest the cowl has been torn from the left-hand International Aero Engines V2500 powerplant.

The aircraft had been operating flight BA762 to Oslo but returned shortly after departure, according to surveillance tracks.

Heathrow's operator says the northern runway 09L/27R is closed but that the other runway, which was briefly closed, has re-opened.
