Preliminary evidence indicates that the German-operated Douglas DC-3 which crashed at Berlin Schonefeld today suffered a failure in its left engine after take-off.

Seven occupants, out of 28 on board, suffered injuries as the aircraft came down near the Berlin Brandenburg Airport construction site.

Among those on board was Stuttgart parliamentary member Stefan Kaufmann, who was using the Twitter social network to inform followers that he was taking the flight before subsequently stating that he had been involved in the crash.

"The left engine propeller failed shortly after take-off," he said, adding that the aircraft was "burning" and that several firefighting vehicles were attending.

Raisin Bomber

Images from the scene show that the twin-engined aircraft was severely damaged in the accident, particularly the right wing.

Air Service Berlin had been operating the DC-3 'Rosinenbomber', which was one of the two vintage aircraft that made the final flights out of Berlin Tempelhof Airport before it closed. The DC-3 had also been exhibited during the ILA 2010 Berlin Air Show earlier this month.
