Boeing’s order intake increased by more than a third last year over 2006, pushing its order backlog up by 40% to 3,400 aircraft. Output also saw a significant rise, increasing by 10% to its highest since 2001.

The US airframer racked up 287 orders in December, pitching its full year net sales to an all-time industry record of 1,413 orders. This was 35% of its previous best of 1,044 set in 2006 and significantly ahead of the existing record of 1,055 set by Airbus in 2005.

Boeing’s output rose during 2007 to its highest since the start of the decade – 441 aircraft. Its decade-best level of 527 deliveries was set in 2001, while the airframer’s all-time industry record of 620 shipments was set in 1999, shortly after the merger with McDonnell Douglas.

Production of the 737 reached a new high of 330 aircraft, beating the previous record of 320 set in 1999. 777 shipments also matched the all-time record of 83 set that same year. Output of the 747 was up from 14 in 2006 to 16 last year, while 767 deliveries remained stable at 12 aircraft.

The huge order intake has pushed Boeing’s order backlog up by 40% from the end of 2006 to a record 3,427 units. While the bulk (60%) of the outstanding orders are for the 737, the 787 makes a significant contribution with its 817 orders (almost double the total a year ago) representing around a quarter of the total backlog.
