Start-up carrier Cambodia Bayon Airlines has inked a contract with AVIC Aircraft for up to 20 Xian Aircraft MA60 turboprops.
The agreement comprises of a firm order for two MA60s, and a letter of intent for 18 additional turboprops. The first two MA60s are scheduled to be delivered to the carrier by end 2014.
The proposed carrier is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bayon Holding Limited, which in turn is owned by China’s Joy Air. Joy Air is a joint venture between AVIC Group and China Eastern Airlines.
The carrier, which will be based in Phnom Penh, plans to operate the Chinese-made turboprops on domestic services. Thereafter, it also intends to purchase Airbus A320s for regional services to destinations such as China, Japan and Korea.
Its five year plan is to grow to a fleet of 20 MA60s and 10 A320s.
Set up this April, Cambodia Bayon still applying for an air operator’s certificate and targeting to launch operations by end 2014.
