Cathay Pacific Airways has unveiled a new business class seat for its long-haul flights, and plans to roll out the new product offering on its Airbus A330 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

The Oneworld carrier will roll out the new seat on a new A330 on some flights to Sydney from March 2011, says Cathay. The first 777-300ER with the new seat will enter service in April 2011. Cathay will deploy the new product offering on some 777 flights to New York, Los Angeles and London.

Cathay Pacific represents the second publicly-announced customer for the James Park Associates (JPA)-designed reverse-herringbone suite. US Airways is already a customer.

JPA was also responsible for Cathay's entire business class cabin design, including the seat colour and trim, says a spokeswoman for the firm.

Besides taking new aircraft deliveries with the seats, Cathay will also retrofit existing A330s and 777s from mid-2012 and late 2011 respectively, it adds.

"By February 2013, all 30 Boeing 777-300ER and 20 long-haul A330-300s in the fleet are expected to have the new product," says the carrier.

Cathay's new business class seat reclines into a flat bed that is wider and longer than the airline's existing seats. The airline has also changed other parts of its business class product, offering a refurbished cabin with artwork on the interiors and new bedding and dinnerware.

"Our new flat-bed business class seat was developed after listening to what our customers had to say and it will, I believe, underline our commitment to excellence in innovation," says Cathay's CEO Tony Tyler.
