Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines and Taiwan's China Airlines have signed an agreement to deepen their cooperation in various aspects of the air transport market.
The "memorandum of cooperation" allows the carriers to represent each other in their respective markets in the passenger, cargo, maintenance, and ground handling operations.
"Both carriers will continue to revise their operations based on the new agreement, which creates a win-win situation for passengers who travel across the Straits by providing more efficient and convenient service," say the airlines.
The agreement would expand their global air networks, increase passenger and freight load factors, reduce staff and operating costs, and increase their competitiveness in the worldwide air travel market, they add.
The carriers say that even before this agreement, they have had a strong partnership and worked together on inter-line check-in, passenger baggage check-through, mileage program partnerships, flight attendant exchange programmes, and inter-line ticket issuing. The two airlines also work together in the cargo business.
