Nigerian authorities have confirmed that a regional aircraft has crashed during take-off from Lagos.

Images from the scene indicate the aircraft is an Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia.

It was operating an internal flight to the city of Akure, according to updated information from the Nigerian airspace management agency NAMA. It had originally indicated that it was heading for Benin.

It states that the aircraft, chartered from the fleet of Associated Aviation, departed from runway 18L but "did not gain height".

Lagos airport's operator says rescue and firefighting efforts are "going on" but there are no details on the number of occupants or possible casualties.

There is no positive identification of the airframe involved but Associated Aviation, based at Lagos, operates a small fleet including EMB-120s and an ERJ-145 according to Flightglobal's Ascend Online database.
