Elbit Systems is to establish a mission training centre for the Israeli air force's Lockheed Martin F-16C/D and F-16I fighter pilots, under a private finance initiative deal worth about $55 million.

Announced on 15 July, the award covers a development phase and the provision of instruction and maintenance services over a 15-year operating period.

Elbit says the new centre will enable the air force to train under various mission scenarios in different war zones, and will provide relevant threat environments. Pilots will be able to train in pairs, or in formations of up to eight aircraft, under the supervision of flight instructors.

The centre will also be suitable for operation in conjunction with other Israeli military training systems, such as those for helicopter pilots, unmanned air vehicle operators and ground forces personnel.
