The US Federal Aviation Administration is proposing rules to require domestic carriers to provide pilots with a means to visually monitor the cockpit door area, and cabin crew with a way to discreetly notify the flightdeck of a threat, writes Kerry Ezard.

There are at least two ways to comply with the requirement to identify people requesting access to the locked flightdeck, says the notice of proposed rulemaking: a video surveillance system or a viewing device in the door coupled with an audio confirmation procedure.

Carriers would have two years from the date of the final rule to install the necessary equipment.
