Airbus is to go ahead with a re-engining programme for its long-haul A330, confirming that the two variants will be designated the A330-800neo and -900neo.

The aircraft is set to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2017 and be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines.

Airbus disclosed its long-awaited decision ahead of the opening of the first day’s trade at the Farnborough air show.

It intends to achieve a 14% fuel-burn improvement with the new type.

As well as modernised engines, the aircraft will feature a range of other aerodynamic and cabin enhancements.
