Boeing's 737 programme chief Beverly Wyse expects the "Advanced Technology" winglet it has developed for its new Max family to deliver performance improvement over the design on the current family.
The 737 Max family was launched with the 737NG winglet, jointly developed by Boeing and Aviation Partners, but was recently switched to the revised Advanced Technology winglet design that was created in-house.
A full scale model of the new winglet design is on display in the static park at the show, adjacent to the Boeing 737-900.
"At launch, we'd always planned to look at the winglet, and the Advanced Technology design incorporates both raked tip and winglet technology," says Wyse, vice-president and general manager of the 737 programme. "It will offer a 1.0-1.5% improvement over the current design."
Wyse says that Boeing is "still looking at" the possibility of offering the advanced technology winglet as a retrofit on the 737NG, although the airframer has indicated that such a move is unlikely to have a workable business case.
