China's Kunming Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of 10 Boeing 737 Max 7s.

Boeing says the Chinese carrier would become the nation's launch customer for "the improved" 737 Max 7.

On 11 July, the manufacturer confirmed that the Max 7 had been redesigned to accommodate two more seat rows, giving it 12 more seats than are available today on the 737-700, assuming a two-class configuration.

"We look forward to welcoming Kunming Airlines as a 737 Max 7 launch customer in China and finalising the deal in the near future," says Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief executive Ray Conner.

Kunming Airlines, based at Changshui airport in the province of Yunnan, serves more than 40 cities across China with a fleet of eight 737-700s and 11 737-800s, notes Boeing.

Shenzhen Airlines is the carrier's major shareholder.
