Mexico's Viva Aerobus has added 25 Airbus A321neos to its order and upgauged existing orders for 16 A320neos to the larger A321neo.

The changes grow the airline's orderbook with Airbus to 80 A320 family aircraft, comprising 15 A320ceos, 24 A320neos and 41 A321neos. Viva Aerobus' backlog rose from 36 to 61 aircraft.

Airbus says the airline has not selected an engine for the new aircraft, although Viva Aerobus' four in-service A320neos are powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines. The Monterrey-based airline is an all-A320 family operator.

"Our decision to introduce the A321neo to our fleet reflects our long-term commitment to cost reduction, to innovation, operational and environmental efficiency, and enhancing our passenger experience," says Gian Carlo Nucci, group chief executive of Viva Aerobus.

"These additional aircraft will allow us to capture opportunities in Mexico, and we can think of no aircraft better suited than the A321neo with 240 seats with which to endeavour our growth objectives."

The airline placed its first order for Airbus aircraft in 2013, with a deal for 52 A320 family aircraft. It added orders for three more A320ceos subsequently. Viva Aerobus was previously a Boeing 737 operator.
