European regional operator Flybe Group has named former EasyJet chief commercial officer Saad Hammad as its new chief executive, who will take over the role from Jim French.

Hammad, who was also a non-executive director at German carrier Air Berlin, will lead the group from 1 August, says Flybe. He joins as UK-based Flybe is undergoing a restructuring effort to stem losses.

French will become non-executive chairman after stepping down from the post.

Hammad says the airline's reorganisation is making "excellent progress", adding: "The business is once again 'fit to compete'."

He will join Flybe from his position as managing director of private equity company Gores Group. Previous roles have also included sales and marketing posts with companies including Proctor & Gamble and Thorn-EMI.
