Ghanaian start-up carrier Starbow will begin operations on 29 August from Accra in the West African country using two British Aerospace BAe 146-300 aircraft which it has purchased from Lufthansa.
Starbow will initially serve Ghana's domestic market, flying between four cities in the country.From October, the carrier will begin serving other countries in the region including Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Liberia.
Chief executive Bock Friesen said that Starbow will eventually fly to 12 cities within a 2h radius of Accra.To support this growth it plans to purchase or lease another four regional aircraft, but this number could rise, he added.Starbow is aiming for IATA Operational Safety Audit certification. "Our owners are determined to make this a safe airline," Friesen said.
Friesen is a former chief commercial officer of Air Malta, with previous stints at Canadian Pacific, Air Canada and Lufthansa.
The airline is backed by Ghanaian investors, he added.
