Russia intends to strengthen its position in the space industry by forging more partnerships, says Anatoly Perminov, head of the Russian Federal Space Agency.

Perminov, who visited the extensive Russian space exhibition at ILA yesterday, says that it intends to retain its 30% market share in the commercial launch market and expand its spacecraft production.

He says that the new Soyuz launch facilities at the Guinea Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana is a perfect example of what a strategic partnership can achieve.
Soyuz launches are scheduled to start from Kourou in mid 2009 and it is hoped that up to 30 Soyuz-ST launches will take place in the next 10 years.

Perminov says: “The effectiveness of the cooperation between many foreign partners is also confirmed by the work on the International Space Station (ISS), now in its 10th year of operation.”

He says that while Russia is still weak in the high-tech segments of the global space market, including land-based communication and navigation and remote earth sensing, these are all areas where partnerships could help strengthen Russia's position.
