Flight International online news 09:00 GMT: Italian air accident authorities believe they have determined the location of the flight recorders from the Tuninter ATR 72 turboprop which crashed into the sea near Palermo on 6 August.

An Italian Navy ship searching for the wreckage of the ATR in deep water has received signal transmitting at a radio frequency matching that of the aircraft’s locator beacon.

The signal is being transmitted from a location about 2.5km from the crash site and at a depth of 1,440m (4,720ft).

The Italian air accident investigation agencyk, ANSV, said it would carry out further checks to be sure the signal is coming from the ATR 72’s flight recorder, before dispatching a robotic recovery vessel.

At least 13 of the 39 passengers and crew on board the ATR, operating between Bari and Djerba, died as the aircraft attempted to ditch after both engines stopped operating.
