KLM today operated a scheduled passenger flight between Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris Charles de Gaulle running on a blend of biokerosene derived from cooking oil and traditional jet fuel.

The Dutch carrier claimed the title of "the first airline in the world to operate a commercial flight carrying 171 passengers on biokerosene".

KLM announced on 22 June that it would operate more than 200 biofuel-powered flights between Amsterdam and Paris from September.

Today's Boeing 737-800 flight, which took off from Amsterdam at 12:30 local time, showed that "KLM is ready", said the carrier's managing director Camiel Eurlings.

KLM said it was granted permission to operate the flight by the Dutch Inspectorate for Transport, Public Works and Water Management.

The fuel was supplied by dynamic fuels, via SkyNRG - a consortium launched by KLM, North Sea Group and Spring Associates to develop a sustainable supply chain for aviation biofuels.

KLM was unable to immediately provide further information.
