KLM's engine shop has started maintaining General Electric GEnx powerplants ahead of the planned first Boeing 787 delivery to Air France-KLM later this year.
In December, GE sent a GEnx-1B engine used by an unnamed airline to the Amsterdam facility – part of the manufacturer's MRO partner network – for a combustion chamber replacement.
After that powerplant was returned to GE in early January, a second GEnx-1B, used by a different operator, was inducted into the shop, says Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance.
The MRO specialist had in December been granted European Aviation Safety Agency approval to conduct quick-turn module replacements for engine mid-shafts and combustors.
It aims at gaining an expanded approval covering full engine overhauls "as soon as possible".
