Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has confirmed an order for 20 ATR 72-600s and 16 options, which will go to its Firefly and MASWings subsidiaries.

The order is valued at $840 million, including the options, and deliveries will commence from mid-2013.

The order firms up a memorandum of understanding signed by the carrier in December 2012, and takes the number of firm ATR orders by the new Oneworld carrier to 42.

"The ATR aircraft are clearly playing an important role in the development of MAS, as they connect regional destinations and enable us to feed larger aircraft at our main hubs," says MAS chief executive Ahmad Jauhari.

Firefly, which is based at Subang airport in Kuala Lumpur, operates 12 ATR 72-500s. MASWings also operates 10 of the type and three de Havilland Canada DHC6-300 Twin Otters.
