Operations at Malta airport have been restricted after a serious aircraft accident.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the aircraft involved is a Fairchild Metroliner, although the nature of the operation is unclear.

While initial reports have linked the flight to the European coast guard and border agency, Frontex, the organisation states that it did not deploy the aircraft.

NOTAM information from the airport, dated 24 October, states that runway 13/31 has been “closed due to aircraft accident”. Runway 05 is available for take-off.

Circumstances of the accident are unclear.

Other NOTAMs, dated 23 October, state that the glidepath, DME and localiser for this runway are unavailable.
