In-flight connectivity wizard Gogo announced at NBAA a plan to power up its onboard video offering with the rollout of a wireless content update system that works automatically, inside the hangar.
Gogo Vision offers passengers a library of Hollywood movies, TV shows, news, flight tracker, flight progress information, destination weather and in-cabin file transfer. And now the library can be updated automatically via the company’s Gogo Cloud content delivery network inside any hangar that installs a “simple, no-charge equipment package”.
The system uses “machine to machine” wi-fi technology to automatically load fresh content when the aircraft arrives at a Gogo Cloud location, with no interaction required from the flight crew or maintenance personnel. Gogo Cloud capabilities are already available at select Signature Flight Support facilities
According to John Wade, Gogo Business Aviation’s executive vice president and general manager: “Since the dawn of digital content, keeping aircraft entertainment libraries up to date has been a challenge for the business aviation industry. Transmitting extremely large media files over airborne connections isn’t practical and manual update processes are labour-intensive.”
Wade describes the Gogo Cloud system as “reinventing the process, giving passengers an always-current content library without flight departments having to worry about it”.
NetJets signed up for Gogo Vision earlier this year.
Gogo also unveiled new features for its Vision content library. From December, Vision will be available for viewing on cabin monitors, in addition to personal wi-fi devices such as tablets and laptops. And, Vision no longer requires integration with an in-flight connectivity system to complete its Digital Rights Management (DRM) verification. In addition to simplifying the installation and configuration process, this makes Gogo Vision a fully global, stand-alone IFE solution that’s accessible anytime during a flight.
Separately, Gogo is rolling out an expanded suite of cockpit and datalink services for its business aviation customers from Honeywell’s Global Data Center, along with several cockpit and operational applications that will be available for use by broadband internet connection through its ATG 1000 in-flight connectivity system.
