Norwegian has signed an agreement to lease two new Boeing 787-9s from New York-based lessor MG Aviation.
The airline said in a statement that the two aircraft will be delivered in the first quarter of 2016 and take its long-haul fleet to 10 aircraft.
“In order to run a competitive long-haul operation, we are dependent on brand new cost-efficient aircraft. I'm very satisfied to have secured our first two 787-9 Dreamliners. This is a fantastic airplane with high passenger comfort, long range and low fuel burn,” says chief executive Bjørn Kjos.
Flightglobal’s Ascend Online Fleets database shows that Norwegian has three 787-8s in service and a further five on order. The airline is using the aircraft on long-haul services to Bangkok, New York and Fort Lauderdale, primarily from its Oslo and Stockholm hubs.
Earlier this year, the carrier encountered a number of technical issues with its 787s, which resulted in one of the aircraft being taken out of service for 12 days in October to rectify a series of problems.
