The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the 20 January late night near midair collision between an American Airlines Boeing 777-200 and two US Air Force C-17s near New York City after an air traffic controller operational error.
Investigators say American Flight 951, en route from the John F Kennedy international airport to Sao Paulo, converged head-on within one mile of the C-17s about 80 miles southeast of the airport.
"The air traffic controllers talking to each of the aircraft received conflict alerts, and immediately provided traffic advisories and turned their aircraft to resolve the conflict," says the NTSB. "In addition, the American Airlines crew responded to directions provided by the [traffic collision alerting system]."
NTSB says no one was injured in the 22:30EST incident. Reporting TCAS resolution advisories to the NTSB became mandatory in January 2010.
