A Lockheed Martin F-16C fighter overran the runway at the AirVenture event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on 28 July.
The F-16C belonging to the 100th Fighter Sqn of the Alabama Air National Guard rolled off the north end of Runway 36 at Wittman Regional Airport. The nose gear appeared to collapse after the aircraft continued onto the grass. The impact also cracked the single-engine fighter’s nose cone.
The aircraft came to a stop not far from where dozens of general aviation aircraft owned by visitors to the international fly-in were parked.

The F-16C, a Block 30 example delivered in 1987, was among active military aircraft joining the static display, including a US Navy Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet and a US Air Force Northrop T-38.
AirVenture handles hundreds of aircraft entering the landing pattern around the general aviation airport every day of the week-long event. But the F-16C mishap was the first serious safety incident reported during the show.

Earlier in the week, a Piper Cub en route to Oshkosh crashed in Lake Winnebago still several miles from its destination, killing two people. That incident is being investigated by the US National Transportation Safety Board.
