Boeing and American Airlines are joining forces for the EcoDemonstration programme, aimed at evaluating technologies for implementation on the existing 737, as well as a conceptual New Small Airplane.
Boeing will evaluate an adaptive trailing edge, variable area fan nozzle, flight trajectory optimisation for in-flight planning and regenerative fuel cells for onboard power.
The 13-week test campaign on a new-build 737-800 in the third quarter of 2013 will include six weeks of flying.
