Fifty years ago on 20 December the Boeing 707 flew for the first time. It was a time when propellers gave way to the jet engine, says Boeing in a statement to mark the occasion.

Powered by early Pratt & Whitney engines, the initial 707s had range capability that was barely sufficient to cross the Atlantic.
