Israeli flag-carrier El Al has shown off its first Boeing 787 twinjet, after the aircraft was painted in the airline's colour scheme.

Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, the 787-9 (4X-EDA) has been named 'Ashdod', after the Israeli port city.

Flight Fleets Analyzer lists the aircraft as being taken from US lessor Air Lease.

El Al is intending to acquire 16 787s – a mix of -9s and the smaller -8 – in order to replace aircraft including its Boeing 747-400s and 767-300ERs.

It has also indicated that it holds options to take the 787-10, the largest member of the twinjet family.
