Boeing this morning took delivery of the first 787 wings, each 98ft (30m) in length.
The composite wings, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), were flown from Nagoya, Japan to Boeing’s Everett facility via the Boeing 747LCF Dreamlifter.
The wings were immediately delivered to the 787 final assembly factory, says Boeing. Additional work, including attaching the wingtip and movable surfaces, will be completed by the airframer.
The three Japanese majors, MHI, Fuji Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, collectively account for 35% of the 787 structure.
The first forward fuselages and main landing gear wells, which Kawasaki produces, and the centre wing box, which Fuji produces, were delivered earlier in 2007.
The ceremonial roll-out of the first 787 is planned for July 8.
