Malaysia Airlines has formally become a member of the Oneworld alliance at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

The airline is the 12th member of the alliance, and the first country in Southeast Asia to join the group, plugging a geographical gap for Oneworld.

Its addition to Oneworld will expand the alliance's global coverage to more than 840 destinations in 155 countries, says the airline.

"Oneworld enables its member airlines to deliver more services and benefits to their customers - particularly frequent flyers - than any airline can on its own," says MAS group chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya.

"For Malaysia Airlines, joining the alliance will strengthen its competitiveness, enabling it to offer customers an unrivalled alliance global network served by the highest quality partners from each of the world's key regions."
