Middle Eastern carrier Qatar Airways is to open services to the Eritrean capital, Asmara, towards the end of this year.

It will begin operating the route from Doha on 4 December.

Qatar Airways says it will serve Asmara twice-weekly using Airbus A320s configured with 12 business-class and 132 economy-class seats.

"There is clearly demand and huge potential to and from Eritrea, one of the many underserved markets in Africa," says chief executive Akbar Al Baker.

Qatar Airways is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance.
