Mactan-Cebu International airport is forecasting a passenger growth of between 4-4.5% over the next 10 years, as construction of a new terminal is due to commence this year.

Speaking to Flightglobal at Routes Asia 2015, Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority’s general manager Nigel Paulvillarete says the airport is targeting to grow its international traffic, primarily targeting the China, Middle East and India markets.

He explains that 75% of the airport’s traffic is now domestic, of which half can be attributed to traffic on the Cebu-Manila route.

The airport saw seven million passengers passed through its gates last year, exceeding its capacity of five million.

Paulvillarete says the joint venture between GMR Group and Megawide Construction Corporation is due to start construction of a new terminal this year. The 13 million passengers per annum capacity building, which will cater to international traffic, is targeted to be operational by 2018.

Thereafter, the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation will also renovate the existing terminal. In the meantime, the joint venture is conducting a slight “face-lift” on the ageing terminal, adds Paulvillarete.

He expects the airport to hit its capacity by 2024, and for the joint venture to propose a further expansion of both terminals thereafter.

GMR-Megawide was awarded the concession to construct, develop, renovate and operate the Philippine airport for 25 years, after winning the bid for the first airport in the country to be privatised under a public-private partnership project.
