Los Angeles World Airports is setting the bar high for all airports in the USA as it readies its glitzy new Bradley West international terminal at Los Angeles International (LAX), a $1.6 billion project featuring stainless steel waves in the ceiling to mimic nearby Pacific waves.

The terminal will open on 12 December 2012, with 16 international gates, including nine A380-capable widebody gates.

LAX broke ground in March 2010 and building progress can be tracked in real-time via a live webcam.

LAX will also undergo renovations in parts of terminals 7 and 8, and is working with Delta on a $250 million facelift for T5.

"The 100ft ceilings and two stories of premier lounges will give LAX a new image around the world," said Anette Kaiser-Rott, of the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Bradley West development, designed by Denver-based Fentress, will have a dedicated children's play area and is expected to receive Silver LEED certification for energy efficiency.

LAX has reached 56 million passengers and the new terminal will allow it to grow to a projected 63 million in 2014.
