Stratos Aircraft is gearing up to begin windtunnel testing in April of a 1/8th-scale model of its Stratos 714 single-engined jet. The Bend, Oregon-based start-up has secured a slice of external funding but needs more investment to bring five-seat Williams FJ44-3AP-powered aircraft to market.

"Among other things, the tests will give us valuable data on lift and drag for the wing and fuselage along with a number of parameters to verify stability and control," says Stratos chief executive Alexander Craig. "With the results we'll be able to refine the profile of the Stratos 714, if needed, in anticipation of building the prototype aircraft [within the next two years]."

Stratos has opened the orderbook and is "taking $10,000 deposits on delivery positions" for the $2million aircraft which has a projected cruise speed of 400kt (740km/h) and a range of 1,500nm (2,775km).
