Boeing MD-80 wet-lease operator Jetran Air is the world's first operator of the European Aviation Safety Agency-approved Chapter 4 noise compliant MD-82 twinjet.

The Romanian carrier has six MD-80 family aircraft and will have them all converted by the end of 2007 with Comtran's Advanced Jet Nozzle. According to Comtran, which manufactures and fits the nozzle and cone mixer kit in Tucson, Arizona, the US Federal Aviation Administration and EASA-certificated Advanced Jet Nozzle is applicable to all MD-80 series aircraft and all P&W JT8D-200 series engines.

Jetran's Valceanu Gheorghe says the upgrade will "ensure the lowest noise landing fees at all airports, reduced fuel burn and emissions, access to markets where Chapter 3 aircraft are increasingly penalised either through curfews or increased landing fees and an increase in useful life of the MD-80 by at least 15 years".

Comtran says European operators face the harshest noise penalties and are the most likely early customers for the MD-80 noise kit. Major operators include Alitalia and SAS, along with American and Delta in the USA, where most of the world's nearly 1,000 MD-80s operate.
