Trinidad and Tobago’s government is to inject $250 million into BWIA West Indies Airways under a plan to restructure the troubled state-owned operator into a new national entity.

Reports say BWIA will undergo a major management and corporate shake-up with changes to work rules and the “culture” of the airline.

The government will continue to hold a majority share, but the private sector will be courted to provide investment.

Trinidad’s Ministry of Trade and Industry confirms the reports, but further details are not available. It is unclear if the government intends to pursue an integration plan with BWIA and other Caribbean operators.

An overhaul and significant cash infusion into BWIA was recommended by a task force headed by businessman Lok Jack. The government appears prepared to adopt the plan, possibly with Jack as spearhead, say reports.
