United Airlines purchased a number of Boeing 737 and 777 aircraft off lease in the first quarter, among 23 aircraft it brought onto its balance sheet during the period.

The Chicago-based carrier purchased two 737-700s during the period, one from Montreal Global Capital Solutions (MSN 28783), a subsidiary of BMO Financial, and one from Pacific Century Leasing (MSN 28782), Flight Fleets Analyzer shows.

United purchased three 777-200s – two from NCC Key Company (MSNs 27579 and 29477) and one from Northwestern Mutual (MSN 27578), the database shows.

Andrew Levy, chief financial officer of United, said earlier in April that the carrier purchased six mainline and 17 regional aircraft in its fleet from lessors in the first quarter. The deals give the airline "greater flexibility and better economics" with its fleet.

Capital expenditures totaled $1 billion at United during the period, a quarterly earnings statement shows.

Separately, United extended leases on two Airbus A320s during the first quarter, a quarterly activity update from SkyWorks shows. The adviser represented the financial institution in the transaction.

The airline leases 20 of the 97 A320s in its fleet, Fleets Analyzer shows. Lessors include AerCap, Airbus Leasing, Banc of America Leasing, GECAS, Genesis Aircraft Services and SkyWorks Leasing.

SkyWorks arranged two separate sales of three 777s at a US carrier on behalf of the sellers, its activity update shows. The United 777s are the only sales of the aircraft at a US carrier during the period, according to Fleets Analyzer.

SkyWorks declines to comment further on its first quarter activities.
