Montevideo has used its veto rights to block Varig's proposed sale of its 49% stake in Pluna to the UK's Ashmore Group. Uruguay's government, which holds another 49% stake, is concerned that whoever replaces Varig as Pluna's manager must continue to operate the airline as Uruguay's flag carrier. For that reason officials have also nixed a bid by Aerolineas Argentinas.
