Nestling amongst the gleaming new jets, turbprops and helicopters here on the flightline at the Dubai Airshow is a Zetavia Ilyushin Il-76TD. This 1970s Soviet era, four-engined airlifter still plays a crucial role around the globe carrying cargo into far-flung locations.

FlightGlobal’s executive editor Max Kingsley-Jones and publisher Mark Pilling clambered aboard and give their take on the upper deck cockpit, the navigator’s station in the blubous nose of the Il-76 and the main cargo deck. Thank you to the team at Ukraine’s Zetavia for access to the aircraft. It will be on display at the show all week. Zetavia, which was founded in 2009, has five Il-76s available for charter.
