Rockwell Collins has come up with a unique way of improving the sound quality of in-flight entertainment on business jets – and it’s all down to a chance encounter.
Jaime McGrath, principal marketing manager, cabin systems for the company, says on a recent commercial flight he happened to be seated next to sound engineer Paul Gilman, who runs Gilman Sound, which has a business improving the PA systems and acoustics at sports stadia.
They got chatting and Gilman explained that his company could help reduce some of the sound loss associated with the compression of MP3 music files.
The process is simple, explains McGrath. An engineer from Gilman takes a copy of the entire music and film library on board an aircraft and applies its proprietary algorithm to remaster the files.
The technology is being demonstrated on Rockwell Collins’s MEBA exhibit and McGrath is confident that customers will notice the difference. “I’ve never heard sound so big,” he says.
