A Thomson Airways flight was diverted to Athens today following a security alert on the Boeing 757-200 aircraft, the airline has confirmed.

Flight TOM 226, was en route from Bristol to Sharm el Sheikh when the pilot made the decision to divert to the Greek capital, says a statement.

It says: "As a precautionary measure and in the interests of customer safety, the pilot took the decision to divert the aircraft into Athens airport.

"The aircraft landed safely into Athens at approximately 1300 hours (UK time) and a full investigation of the aircraft will be conducted in line with air safety regulations and procedures."

The aircraft was escorted to the airport by Greek air force Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters.

No one was injured during the incident.
