The AN/APG-78 Longbow mast-mounted radar that equips the Boeing AH-64E Apache has completed the US Army’s Follow-On Test and Evaluation (FOT&E) II.

The fire control radar, produced by a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman called Longbow LLC, demonstrated several new modes and longer range detection capability against land, air and sea targets, says Northrop Grumman

The work tested version six of the radar’s software, and the performance improvements required no hardware changes. The radar’s detection range is doubled, and detection of UAVs is improved.

“Validating these performance enhancements during FOT&E, the Longbow radar successfully detected numerous ground and maritime targets at extended detection ranges. Those targets were then engaged and destroyed by AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile missiles fired from the Apache helicopter.”
