Singapore Airlines is investigating after the crew of an Airbus A380 on the Singapore-Hong Kong route discharged a halon extinguisher after smelling smoke in an aircraft lavatory.

"There was no fire, although, as a precaution, a halon extinguisher was discharged by the crew," says an SIA spokesman. The aircraft landed without incident in Singapore. But after landing ground crews "later found signs of burns to electrical wiring in the forward cargo hold", he adds.

The incident occurred on 31 January, as the three-year old aircraft (9V-SKD) descended into Singapore. The carrier is conducting an investigation with Airbus.

"Airbus is aware of the incident, and a team of Airbus experts and engineers is supporting SIA and the investigation," says a spokesman for the airframer.
