A door on a Qantas A380 was damaged as the aircraft was undergoing scheduled maintenance in Sydney.

The incident took place inside the hangar, the carrier says in response to FlightGlobal’s queries.

Media reports have suggested that the door was nearly ripped off. The Sydney Morning Herald states that the aircraft struck scaffolding while being rolled out of the hangar.

Qantas did not confirm nor deny the details of the incident, but would only say that the door “sustained some damage”.

The affected aircraft is VH-OQB, an 11-year-old A380. In 2012, the aircraft was part of three A380s found to have wing rib-foot cracks, and were sent for repairs.

In the current incident, Cirium fleets data indicates that the aircraft was moved to storage on 8 November after the incident took place, and is scheduled to return to service on 15 December.

"We are working to minimise impacts to our customers and we apologise for any delays," Qantas adds. It has had to cancel some flights as a result of the incident, including its Sydney-Singapore-London Heathrow service.

The Oneworld carrier currently operates a fleet of 12 A380s.
