Fiji has approved the closure of Biaugunu Airport.

The airport was opened in 1980, but better road links on the island have made the airport unnecessary, says Fiji's government.

Scheduled services to the airport ceased in 1984.

"The airport, however, had been maintained by Airport Fiji Limited (AFL) at a cost over the years," it says.Biaugunu Airport is located on Fiji's second largest island, Vanua Levu, along the shores of Natewa Bay.
